Via Appia Antica is something extraordinarily special, although it isn’t as big as the Colosseum or as grand as St. Peter’s Basilica, it might be even more important to human history than any other monument in Rome. Why? This innocuous little road was also the very first highway. The very first place where humans began to pick up speed (literally and figuratively) and never look back. It started with something as simple as a few stones on the road, and now we can travel around the world and soon even into space. Man’s wanderlust might not have begun with this stretch of road but it certainly fueled the fire.
